To Hibernate or Not.....Feedback Needed

Okay preemie mummies - and all other mommies too......what have you decided to do this RSV season since we've added H1N1 (Swine Flu) scare to it as well. Have you decided to keep the babies on total lockdown with visitors only? Are you going to go out sometimes but avoid large crowds or are you going to live life in normal mode??? I'm REALLY not looking forward to being a shut in again this RSV season, but I will do what I need to do for my kids. Let me know what you're going to do or what you've done in the past. Thanks to all mummies!

I will be keeping mine pretty well quarantined again this winter...but with some exceptions (we had no exceptions last year). I won't be taking them anywhere there are crowds, but will make a few exceptions for small family dinners at the holidays as long as everyone there is healthy. For example, I will take them to the park to play, but not as part of a mommy group with 20 other children.

Live your life normal. You need to work on their immune system. They might have been preemies but you still need to think about what happens when they go to school unless you are going to lock them up for their whole childhood every winter.

they have been getting all their shots right? did they get a flu shot? if you are worried ask their doctor what he/she thinks. otherwise I say live your life! You cant keep them locked up forever - but be smart about going out dont take them around people who are sick - nobody wants a sick kid(s) nomatter how old they are

Thanks for your comments. While I appreciate feedback from both "sides" I can always tell which mommy has had a preemie(s) and which one hasn't. I think we'll be taking it easy this fall/winter. You may ask, “Can’t they fight it off and build up their immune system? Kids need to get sick, right?” The simple
answer is NO. Since Ali, Nolan and Kate were pre-term, they did not acquire the necessary immunities to fight off infection.
If they contract RSV, they could be hospitalized and develop serious complications. Thanks again to everyone. Keep the comments coming.

I appreciate that you even put this question out there. My twins were 12 weeks early and this will be their first winter. They were born in April. We have been fortunate so far to not have any illness since their stay in the NICU (44 days & 61 days). I will be asking their pediatrician next week and will let you know his thoughts.

We saw the pediatrician yesterday and asked him this very comment. My twins are 6 months old, born 3 months preemie. First of all, he said he would not get them the H1N1 vaccine because he thinks they are protected well enough with their current vaccinations. If vaccine becomes available, my husband and I could get it. He would definitely recommend a flu shot for both of us since we are out in the public more and could bring something home.

As far as staying in, he said church is probably the worst place. Grocery stores not too bad because you don't come in contact with people. And large family gatherings for Christmas, he would just visit for a few hours but not stay 3-4 days or host at our house.

Good luck deciding what your family is going to do!
